Nine signs your website needs a redesign (and when a refresh is enough)

Not every tired website needs rebuilding. Use these nine signs to work out whether your site is costing you leads, and what level of fix makes sense.

Nine signs your website needs a redesign (and when a refresh is enough)

Your website probably needs a redesign if it is slow or awkward on phones, visitors leave without taking action, it no longer describes what you sell, or your team cannot update it without help. If only the look feels dated and the site still brings in leads, a smaller refresh is often enough.

A redesign costs time and money, so it is worth being honest about which problem you actually have. Here are the nine signs we look for.

1. It is slow, especially on phones

Open your site on your own phone using mobile data. If the main content takes more than a few seconds to appear, you are losing people. Google's own guideline for a good experience is that the largest element on the page loads within 2.5 seconds. You can test any page for free with PageSpeed Insights.

2. It is awkward on a phone

Tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, sideways scrolling and forms that fight the keyboard are all signs the site was designed for a desktop first. Most visitors to many business sites arrive on a phone, so check your own analytics.

3. Visitors can't tell what you do

Show your homepage to someone outside your business for five seconds, then ask them what you do and who it is for. If they can't answer, the problem is the message. New visuals alone won't fix that.

4. You get traffic but few enquiries

If people arrive and don't act, look at your calls to action, your proof and your forms. Our guide to turning website visitors into booked calls covers the changes to try first, because some of them don't need a redesign at all.

5. The site no longer matches the business

Services you have stopped offering, old prices, former staff and an outdated logo all make people doubt you. If your business has changed direction, patching rarely works, because the structure of the site reflects the old company.

6. You can't update it yourself

If changing one sentence means raising a ticket or paying an invoice, your site will slowly go stale. A modern site should let your team edit text, images and articles on its own.

7. You don't show up in search

Weak page titles, no sitemap, thin content and slow loading all hold you back. Some of this can be fixed without a rebuild, but if the platform itself gets in the way, it may be time to move. See how to get found on Google and in AI search for what matters.

8. It looks older than your competitors

Visitors compare you with whoever else they have open in another tab. A dated site suggests dated service, even when that is unfair. On its own, though, this is the weakest reason to rebuild, so check it against the other signs.

9. It has security or maintenance problems

Unsupported plugins, expired certificates and platforms that no longer get updates are real risks. When keeping an old site safe costs more each year, replacing it often becomes the cheaper option.

Redesign or refresh?

A refresh is usually enough when:

  • The site brings in leads and the structure still makes sense
  • The platform is fast, secure and easy to edit
  • The problems are mostly copy, images and calls to action

A full redesign makes sense when:

  • Three or more of the signs above apply
  • The platform is slowing you down or can't be updated
  • Your business, audience or offer has changed significantly
Fix the message before you fix the look. A beautiful page that says the wrong thing still loses leads.

Don't lose your search rankings in the move

A redesign can quietly damage your existing traffic. Before launch, list every page that currently gets visits. Keep those addresses where you can, redirect the ones that change, and submit your new sitemap straight after launch.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a business redesign its website?

There is no fixed schedule. Many businesses make small improvements continuously and only rebuild when the signs above start to stack up.

How much does a website redesign cost?

It depends on the number of unique designs, custom features and how much copy is needed. AROI websites start from $499. Our website pricing guide explains what drives the price.
